Our upstairs bathroom has always been a bit of a challenge. We have a small medicine cabinet above a tiny vanity and a white storage piece above the toilet. While the medicine cabinet does offer some storage, it's not much. Every time I opened the door, I'd be hit with a tube of toothpaste or some errant floss. It was not fun.
A few weekends ago on tax free weekend, the hubby and I took a trip up to The Container Store to take advantage. I had been thinking about what I wanted for awhile and settled on acrylic organizers. I spent a good half hour in that aisle and picked out some great stuff. I got two 3-section organizers, one with a flip lid and one without, and a medicine cabinet organizer. I also picked up an acrylic shelf for the open space in the cabinet above the toilet.
When we got home, I couldn't wait to get started. I literally took everything out of all the cabinets and spread it out on the floor. I sorted through everything, tossed expired products, and relocated a few things. I also shopped the rest of the house for containers and other things I could use to organize. I really should have taken a before photo, but here's how the cabinet above the toilet turned out.
I already had the 3 glass canisters on top. One is filled with Q-tips, one with cotton balls, and another with all my hair clips and elastics. On the bottom left, I grabbed a tray from my parent's house I knew wasn't being used and made it into a little oral hygiene station. It has mouthwashes next to a glass jar which houses my toothbrush, toothpaste, and travel toothbrush holder. To the right is the acrylic shelf with an Ikea vase full of different creams and lotions. Below that is the 3-section acrylic organizer from The Container Store. On the left side is different flosses, followed by extra contact lenses, and then jewelry cleaner.
The medicine cabinet was a little trickier simply because the space was a lot smaller. Here is the final results:
The top shelf is some medicines like Advil, etc. Below that is the 3-sectioned acrylic organizer with the flip lid. I put extra chapsticks in one section, Tums in another, and then my vitamins in the last section. On the bottom is the cabinet organizer I picked up which thankfully fit perfectly. I was worried it might be too wide, but it slid right in. I put all my cleansers, contact solution, and some odds and ends here. It took a few tries to get everything just right, but I'm happy with the fact that nothing hits me when I open the cabinet.
All in all, this was a fairly easy project that I should have done months earlier. Now that it's done, I'm inspired to organize the rest of the house! I love that it's so easy to find what I need now.
My biggest advice is that you don't have to go out and buy all new things to organize. Yes, you might need a few containers here and there, but you can easily reuse things you already have lying around the house. Mixing and matching new and old is the key.
Be well,
